Normally a faculty member in the appropriate field reads the paper and decides whether the paper rates a grade of C or above (passing) or whether it falls into the C- to F range (failure). The paper does not receive a letter grade, just a "pass" or "fail." Students awarded a "pass" receive Honors credit for the course. Planning and Deadlines Students should contact the Theology department chair early on in the semester abroad in order to identify an appropriate topic and the appropriate faculty member to whom the paper will be submitted. Once a reader has been identified, the student should be in contact with the faculty reader as work on the paper progresses, consulting on the topic, the general outline of the paper, and the sources to be used. For students studying abroad in the fall semester, the paper is due by January 5th, unless other arrangements are agreed upon with the faculty reader. For students studying abroad in the spring semester, the paper is due by June 15, unless other arrangements are made with the faculty reader. Late papers will not be accepted. Length: 10-14 pages (a minimum of 3,000 words) Paper Topic(s) Since students may take a variety of Theology courses to fulfill their second core course, the nature of the paper is going to vary depending on the individual student's study abroad course. Some theology courses are focused on biblical theology, while others concentrate on more historical, comparative, or systematic theology. Whatever the topic, the student's paper ought to demonstrate achievement of one or more the following learning aims: Knowledge of the basic contours of a sub-discipline of Theology into which the particular subject matter of the course fits (either biblical studies; the history of Christian thought; systematic theology; or theology, ethics and culture). Relate the particular subject matter of the course to Christianity's basic story of creation and redemption as found in scripture and learned in the student's previous course work. Relate the particular subject matter of the paper to one or more key incidents in the historical development of Christian thought and practice, either those covered in the course itself or the student's previous course work. Demonstrate the student's understanding of one or more primary texts In Christian theology. A topic should be chosen carefully in order to demonstrate the student's depth of learning in one of the theological disciplines Identified in #1 above, and to demonstrate achievement of one or more of the learning aims listed above. The faculty reader (see Instructions in "Planning and Deadlines") can offer guidance in how to craft a paper topic and in identifying those aims most likely to be demonstrated given the course material. Sources should be carefully documented using either Chicago or MLA style. (See https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/help-tools/Resources-for-Students.html or HYPERLINK "https://style.mla.org" https://style.mla.org) Reminders: (1) Bring your A game. Some professors care more about one aspect of paper writing than another. Some particularly hate to see documentation errors; for others, sloppy writing (lots of spelling, punctuation, and other mechanical errors) spells doom. Don't assume that you can neglect any aspect of your essay and pass. (2) All professors will want to see a strong argument, cogently advanced and well-supported with textual evidence. (3) Organization counts. Make sure you have a focused, detailed thesis within your introductory paragraph. Your thesis should outline what is to follow. Succeeding paragraphs should state a topic and supply evidence and analysis to support that topic. Give due attention to your conclusion. A strong conclusion leaves your reader with a clear sense of your perspective and helps the reader to recall the most important aspects of your argument.
